Police may have a break in case

Police in Little Rock are trying to determine if a teenager who is in jail may be linked to a little girl’s death.

6 year-old Kamya Weathersby was shot at least seven times last week during a drive-by, while she slept in her bed.

Police say 18 year-old Kevin Banks is behind bars for a separate murder; he was arrested for shooting a man to death in December.

There is a $3,000 reward for any information about Kamya Weathersby’s death.

Kamya Laid to Rest

Friends and family say their goodbyes to a little girl whose life has been cut short by a violent shooting. It happened at the family’s home off Martin Luther King Junior Drive.

Verita Raine taught Kamya at Children of Light pre-school and says, “She had a very fun loving personality. She was very animated and she was a joy to be around.”

December 29th 6-year-old Kamya Weathersby lost her life in what’s being called a senseless act of violence.

A week after being shot seven times while sleeping she now lies in a small white casket surrounded by pink roses.

Pastor Jay Barrington Minix says, “I’ve talked to the family extensively. They’re very hurt by the situation that’s taken place. Obviously this is a very traumatic and dramatic time for them.”

Saturday hundreds of people mourn and celebrate life of a little girl that brought so much joy to those around her.

Pastor Minix adds, “Today we’re hoping to get across the message that Kamaya’s life and her passing does not have to be a waste. If indeed it can be used to change somebody’s life.”

During the service a pastor hands each one of Kamyas sisters a dolls to always remember her. The casket is than opened for a few minutes to view Kamyas peaceful face one last time.

Stop the Violence founder Rev. Benny Johnson says, “Since 1992 almost 700 blacks have been killed by blacks and it’s time for the community to stand up. I’ve never heard so much out cry in a killing in all my 16-years of stop the violence.”

Rev. Johnson is working with the city to proclaim January “Kamya Weathersby Stop the Violence Month.”

Last week he took down 57 crosses on the corner of Daisy Bates and Martin Luther King Drive. Each representing someone murdered in 2007.

Kamya’s cross now sits alone starting the new year.

Raine says “I hope that people realize what this violence is doing and the impact it has on the community and I hope that it stops. I hope someone comes forward soon.”

Little Rock Police say they’re getting closer to catching Kamyas killers, but still need your help to make an arrest.

There’s a $3,000 dollar reward and all calls are kept confidential. If you know anything call (501) 371- INFO.
