Found Dead: Tierra Adams

31 03 2008

A missing pregnant woman has been found dead nearly 60 miles from where she was last seen alive, deputies told KPRC Local 2 Monday.

Walker County sheriff’s deputies said Tierra Lechall Adams’ body was discovered about a half-mile east of Interstate 45 near Pinedale Road near Huntsville, Texas, on Wednesday.

Huntsville, Texas, is about an hour north of Houston. The city is home to Sam Houston State University and the unit where Texas executes death row inmates.

Adams, 25, was last seen on Jan. 28. She was expected to give birth to a baby girl on Valentine’s Day.

Investigators have not said if Adams was still pregnant when she was found.

Deputies said that clothing and tattoos on the body led to her identification. The cause of her death is under investigation, officials said.

Rose Adams-Itive, Adams’ mother, said her daughter’s boyfriend, Neriah Roberts, told her that the two got into an argument after he caught Adams smoking in his house and he dropped her off in the 12200 block of North Houston Rosslyn Road near State Highway 249 at 1 a.m. on Jan. 29.

Houston police said Roberts gave them an initial statement but refused to cooperate with the investigation.

I am so disappointed with the fact that she was only 60 miles from where she live. You’d think they would’ve found her when they were doing this “extensive” search. And how could you NOT think the boyfriend was a suspect? He dropped her off in the middle of the night on the interstate and refused to cooperate with the investigation – that’s a big clue that he probably had something to do with her disapperance and murder.

Still Missing: Monica Renee Bowie

31 03 2008

On March 30th, a beautiful baby girl was born. On that same day this year, she was supposed to get married. But unfortunately for her loved ones, they are not able to celebrate that day because she is nowhere to be found.

Monica Renee Bowie disappeared July 5th of 2007 from Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, there has been one arrest made in her case – Jasper Keels – who was charged stealing the car that was seen speeding from the scene. Police believes that the motive for the kidnapping was “illegal narcotics activity” however they have not established that Keels knew Monica. Since that last update, police were still looking to make more arrests in the case.

Monica’s fiancee’s Shernotta Walters was arrested in June 2007 for drug possession and felony possession of a firearm. At the time, Walters was on parole after having served almost two years in prison for drug offenses. He was in jail when Bowie went missing. Monica’s mother reported that she does not believe that Walters was involved with the kidnapping.

If you haven’t heard about Monica Renee Bowie until now, I don’t blame you. The mainstream media’s obsession with the missing white woman is one of the reasons you haven’t heard of her. Another perhaps bigger reason though is that Monica’s story isn’t perfect.

TV news producers…are less inclined to go all-out to cover victims whose plight may appear ambiguous, the result of their own reckless or criminal behavior.

If that’s the case, Bowie’s appeal to TV producers was fatally undermined by two pieces of her biography.

First, she was arrested for marijuana and gun possession in June. Her attorney, Gerald Griggs, says it’s the first time she was ever arrested and that the charges were ultimately dropped. Secondly, she has, at times, worked as a stripper since moving to Atlanta in 1999.

“She’s as deserving a human being as anyone, but her story isn’t an easy sell to TV producers,” says Art Harris, a two-time Emmy-winning investigative journalist who worked at CNN for 13 years. “That could change fast if the investigation reveals she’s a clear-cut, damsel-in-distress victim.”

Right. Apparently to them, Monica doesn’t need our help. But here at Black and Missing, we believe that all missing persons the same. No one should be held higher than the other – they are all at risk for danger no matter what situation they were in before.

Just to see how often Monica was being mentioned in the media, I did a quick Google search using “Monica Renee Bowie” and then “Monica Bowie”. Either way I did it, I found that there were a little over 50 articles on her case. Most of these were blogs and message board topics.

The last known news article I found was from September of 2007. I couldn’t believe that there have not been an update since then. Where’s the news on Monica? Why isn’t anybody talking about this?

In honor of Monica, I decided that we should all take action and do our best keep her name alive. Let Monica know that we are still searching for her.

If you will like to help, there are several things you can do:

1. Distribute her flyer. You can print them out or place it on your blog, website or Myspace/Facebook pages. You can find the flyer at the DeKalb County Police Department’s website here.

2. Use Monica’s picture as your avatar on message boards or social networks until she is found. I have uploaded one on Flickr for public use here.

3. Contact the media and demand that they cover or do an update on Monica’s case. NOW.org has a list of media contacts for all states. To find the contacts for Georgia’s news stations, papers, tv and radio stations click here. You can also find a list of national news stations by going to the page entitled “Media Contact List” on the right sidebar of my blog.

4. Donate to the Monica Renee Bowie Reward Fund at any National City Bank under Linda Howard, Trustee to help cover for any costs that might help Monica’s case. There is also a fund in Bank of America in Atlanta. [Source]

5. Or you simply copy and paste this post on your blog or send it to your email contacts to help spread the word.

Any help that you can give is great. I’m sure Monica’s family will really appreciate us being involved in her case.

Why I care about runaways: "Dallas club where 12 year old stripped, will keep license"

30 03 2008

I don’t know who the girl is, what she look like or what race she is (update – just found out that she is black), but this story is a great example of why I care so much about runaways. A lot of them are probably in the same situation as this poor girl. Read story below:

UPDATE #1: Contact Information:

Diamonds Cabaret
2444 Walnut Ridge St
Dallas, Texas 469-522-4911

Feel free to bug them to the fullest until we get answers. Let them know that this situation is NOT acceptable!

The mere fact that a 12-year-old girl danced nude at a northwest Dallas strip club isn’t enough to close its doors.

That’s because the city ordinance that regulates sexually oriented businesses does not allow authorities to revoke the license of such a business for employing someone under the age of 18.

The sixth-grader danced at Diamonds Cabaret over a two-week period late last year, authorities say. They also say they found a 17-year-old girl working in the club in January.

“If they’re not shut down, it’s like they’re giving them permission to have underage girls dancing and working in that club,” said the mother of the 12-year-old. The mother is not being named because her daughter, a runaway at the time of the incident, is considered a sexual assault victim.

Operators of the Diamonds Cabaret at 2444 Walnut Ridge Street did not return calls for comment. Their sexually oriented business license expires in November.

Demonica Abron, 27, who worked as a stripper in the club, and David Bell, 22, are facing charges in connection with the 12-year-old girl’s dancing in the club. Bell does not appear to have been employed by the club.

Police officials are continuing to investigate whether the club’s management knew she was underage.

The 23-page city ordinance does allow revocation of a club’s license if, for example, the club knowingly allows prostitution, the sale or use of drugs at the club, or if there are two convictions for sex-related crimes at the club within a 12-month period.

The department also can suspend, but not revoke, the license of an escort agency for up to 30 days if it has employed anyone under 18.

But the ordinance does not give the department similar power over adult cabarets such as Diamonds Cabaret.

“There’s a laundry list of things we can use to deny or revoke a license, but having a 12-year-old dancing in their establishment is not one of the things that automatically enables us to revoke their license,” said Lt. Christina Smith, a vice unit commander who oversees licensing of such establishments.

The mother of the 12-year-old girl said her daughter ran away in early November. She said the family frantically began looking and her husband finally found their daughter in late November. She was then interviewed by police.

According to court records, the runaway gave the following account:

Bell and Abron, who went by the stage name ‘Jewel,’ offered the runaway shelter. Bell told her that she would be stripping at a club called “Diamonds.”

Bell dropped them off at the club one day and introduced her to a man named “David” in the club’s office.

“Suspect David asked complainant if she had ever danced before, she said no,” the court records state. “David” then gave her an application, which she filled out with a fake name. She also told him that she was 19.

When “David” asked to see her identification, she told him that she didn’t have one. He told her to bring one when she came to work as a dancer.

“Complainant couldn’t think of a fake birthday, so she told suspect ‘David’ she forgot her birthday,” the records state. “Suspect ‘David’ gave her a funny look and told her she would have been born in 1988 if she was 19.”

A couple of days later, Bell drove Abron and the victim back to the club where Abron introduced her to a man named “Steve.”

“Suspect ‘Steve’ told” the girl “to take her clothes off to see if she was too shy to dance nude,” the records state. He told her she would have to pay a fee ranging from $10 to $30 each time she danced nude.

She danced that night and made about $100, of which she gave $30 to “Steve,” the records state.

The court documents are unclear on how many nights she danced.

The mother of the 12-year-old says she believes the club must have known her daughter was underage.

“I think they just didn’t care,” her mother said. “She’s 12, but she’s got the body of a 20-year-old. All they were thinking about was the money she could bring in.”

She said her daughter is now living with her grandmother in Arlington and again attending school.

Abron and Bell were indicted in late February on one count of felony sexual performance of the child in connection with making the 12-year-old work at the club. Both are also accused of engaging in organized crime.

Bell is accused of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated kidnapping. He is still being held in the Dallas County Jail in lieu of $450,000 bail.

Abron, who also faces a prostitution charge, has been released on bail from jail.

A TEEN schoolgirl has gone missing since Easter Monday and her worried mother is asking the public for assistance in locating her. The missing teen Ornella Joseph, 15, of Lumsden Street, Barron Avenue, Gasparillo was last seen dressed in a red long sleeved jersey, a red pair of jeans, and high heel shoes during a zonal Church sports and family day at Couva Junior Secondary School.

Joseph is a Form Four student at Marabella Senior Comprehensive School and a member of In His Image New Testament Church of God in Mayo.

Yesterday, her concerned mother Marcia, 37, told Newsday the last time she saw her daughter, she was standing on the side of the sports grounds cheering on a relative who was in a race.

The mother of three recalled: “Around 9 am on Easter Monday we all left home together — we arrived as a family and all was well until around 11 am when I looked for her and she was not there.”

She said several calls for Ornella were made on the public address system but she never showed up. A report was later made to the Couva Police Station and frantic checks made at the homes of relatives and friends, all proved futile.

Joseph is begging anyone who knows of her daughter’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or call her at 761-9841.
