Found Dead: Denim and Randy Sylvester Jr.

22 06 2008

Scorched earth is all that remained Saturday in a hidden, wooded area in southeast Houston where the bodies of two missing children were found, KPRC Local 2 reported.

“It was like diving into the depths of hell and straight up dealing with the devil,” Quanell X said.

The community activist was instrumental in getting Randy Sylvester Sr., who is the children’s father and sole suspect, to reveal the location of the bodies of 3-year-old Denim and 7-year-old Randy Sylvester Jr.

After leading Pasadena police to two ponds, Sylvester led Quanell X to the final site off of Allendale Road near Old Galveston Road late Friday.

“Both children were partially incinerated,” Capt. Bud Corbett said. “One (was) in what appeared to be remains of a wooden chest and the other (was) in a suitcase.”

That unsettling discovery came after more than five days of searching for the missing children and after an incident where Sylvester threatened reporters, including a KPRC Local 2 crew.

Quanell X said he also noticed that Sylvester was combative at first. Despite that, he said he tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but that changed when Sylvester showed him what he called his “doghouse.”

The so-called “doghouse” is a separate apartment in the same complex where Sylvester spent time away from his wife, but where the children often visited.

According to Quanell X the apartment was filthy and filled with pornography.

“At that moment, along with some other questions that detectives were asking, I knew in my heart that that brother was not innocent,” Quanell X said.

After repeatedly pleading with the father Quanell X said Sylvester finally opened up Friday.

Instead of pointing investigators to the gruesome scene, Sylvester insisted that Quanell X join him and see it in person.

“I don’t know how long I’ll be disturbed about (that), possibly the rest of my life,” Quanell X said, visibly shaken by the memory. “When we were walking it was like he wanted me to see it.”

Those who searched for Randy Jr. and Denim, including Tim Miller with Texas Equusearch, said they knew there was a chance this would end with tragedy, but the children’s fate was hard to accept.

“I don’t believe it’s all sunk in yet,” Miller said. “I just think we’re all in shock.”

Quanell X would not say if Sylvester made a confession, but did share how he feels about Sylvester after this gut-wrenching experience.

“The closest I could get is just straight cold-blooded,” Quanell X said.

Quanell X later told reporters that throughout the process, Sylvester showed very little remorse. He seemed more concerned with his own self-preservation than with the children.

The children’s mother was not available for comment. Authorities said she had to be hospitalized after learning what happened to her children.

A prayer vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday for the children near where their bodies were found.

Found Unharmed: Diana Windowmaker

19 06 2008

Lansing police say they have found 10-year-old Diana Rose Windowmaker. She appears uninjured.

Details were not immediately available on where she was located or the circumstances of her abduction.

Police issued an Amber Alert on Tuesday for the girl who was originally reported as 11 years old.

Valerie Windowmaker, the girl’s mother said earlier in a news conference, “If anybody has seen Diana please help her. Please call police.”

She made a plea to her daughter: “I love you and I want you home.”

Diana was last seen at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of West Maple Street near Comstock Park in the company of a man who looked to be about 40. She was last seen by a younger sibling.

Lansing police spokesman Lt. Noel Garcia said police don’t believe the man took Diana by force, but added that when a young girl “leaves with a person that age, even willingly, there’s some kind of coercion that could be there.”

Garcia said police received tips from the public.

Garcia said the family does not live near where she was abducted. The family stays in an assisted living center in Lansing.

Diana went missing near the Mid-Michigan Leadership Academy. Mark Eitrem, superintendent of the school, said she has never been a student there.

Eitrem said a staff member saw the girl at about 1:30 p.m. with two younger boys. They knocked on the main entrance of the school and Diana asked to use the bathroom, he said. They were not allowed to enter because maintenance was being done on the hallway, he said. The children left.

Eitrem said police were at the three-building campus Tuesday. He said police interrupted a board meeting at about 6 p.m. to ask if there were student activities on campus. Eitrem said there weren’t because school is closed for summer.

Tom Carmoney, an office assistant at the North Neighborhood Center near the school, said he was at the center around the time the girl went missing. He said he never saw her and people were going about their activities in the neighborhood as normal. The area is a mix of residential homes and some vacant buildings.

“It kind of surprised me that someone would come up missing around here because of organizations working around here such as the school,” he said.

Kathy Rogers, who lives on Pine Street, is the coordinator of the Neighborhood Watch 127 and vice present of the Old Forest Neighborhood Association.

She said she did not know the girl but is concerned about neighborhood safety.

“I’ve got a granddaughter who is 13, and it really makes you wonder if it’s safe,” she said.

Her granddaughter does not live in Lansing but visits frequently in the summer.

“I have concerns, you know. I want my granddaughter safe,” she said.

Rogers’ Neighborhood Watch has a meeting tonight and will likely discuss the incident, she said.

Dad: "My kids are probably already dead. We have to all move on"

18 06 2008

The father of a missing 3-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy may have killed his children and dumped their bodies, police told KPRC Local 2.

A Pasadena police detective took a ride in Sky 2 on Tuesday, hoping to find any sign of Randy Sylvester Jr. and his sister, Denim.

“I guess what we’re looking for is luggage, or anything out of the ordinary,” Detective Isaac Villareal said.

Their father, Randy Sylvester Sr., is now being investigated for capital murder. Police said they are trying to retrace his footsteps since his kids disappeared from inside their apartment complex Sunday.

“We had info that he was in this area,” said Villareal.

Detectives said bloodhounds trailed Denim’s scent from the tennis court to Sylvester’s apartment and then to his car.

Police said he also made comments to his estranged wife that implied the children may already be dead.

A woman who left balloons for the children said she got a disturbingly similar phone call from Sylvester on Tuesday afternoon.

“‘My kids are probably already dead. We have to all move on,’” the woman, who requested not to be identified, said Sylvester told her.

Police said Sylvester resisted arrest not long after he became confrontational with the media.

“I’m feeling like I want to fight all y’all,” said Sylvester to a group of reporters and photojournalists.

Meanwhile, volunteers came to help search on the ground after police narrowed down some areas Sylvester went in his car.

“We come here to help, to bring closure to these families,” said Cheryl Lawless with Texas EquuSearch.

Sylvester is charged with resisting arrest and is being held on outstanding traffic warrants from Bellaire. He is under investigation of domestic violence against his wife from an incident on Monday night.
